Baccarat traces its history back more than 500 years to Italy. For hundreds of years, Baccarat was known solely as a game for aristocrats. This card game got its name from the Italy word for zero, or “baccara” because, in the game, all the tens and face cards are worth zero points. Later, the game took on the French adaption of the spelling, or “baccarat.” It is one of the most addictive casino games alongside Slots and Roulette. Mainly due to the fact that you have a good shot at earning big money quickly. But be warned, you can also go bankrupt very quickly if you are not careful.
Baccarat (pronounced bah-cah-rah) has an interesting history. The myth goes that it was based on the old Etruscan legend of a virgin who was forced to throw a nine-sided die to determine her fate. If she threw an eight or a nine, she was elevated to the status of a priestess. If she tossed a six or seven, she could live but in excel. If she threw lower than a six, she would be drowned in the ocean. Luckily, the rules of baccarat are less severe now.
Thanks to online versions of baccarat, it has become more of a game for the masses, without the punishment of death. Sometimes in a casino, you might see the game labelled as “punto banco” baccarat or simply “baccarat.” Either way, it is the same game and one of the most popular Las Vegas-inspired casino games. If you are a 007 fan, you might even have noticed seen James Bond throwing the dice in many of his casino themed movies, and the game isn’t too challenging to pick up. Here is how to play baccarat, and some tips and strategies on betting.
The Rules Of Baccarat
In the typical game of baccarat, the dealer will use between six and eight decks of cards, just like in Blackjack. Before anything else can happen, you must place a bet on either the Player or the Banker. The game starts when both the Player and the Banker are dealt a hand. What’s important to note about baccarat is that you aren’t limited to playing the Player’s hand, and you won’t always win when the Player wins.
When playing online, the cards will be dealt automatically to you, with almost no lag time. However, if you are playing at a live table at an online casino, the cards will be drawn out of a shoe. This is a plastic device where the cards are stored, making it easier for the dealer to draw cards out one at a time.
The first card is dealt to the Player face up. Next, the Banker gets his first card, which is placed in the Banker’s box on the table. The Player is then dealt their second card, followed by another card to the Banker. Both the Banker and the Player both have two cards now.
Once the players are dealt, you must total up the amount of points that both hands have. Tens and face cards (Jack, Queen, and King) are all worth zero points. Ace is worth one point, and all other cards are worth their face value (i.e., a two of hearts is worth two points).
However, if the total of your cards is more than ten, then you use the rightmost or second digit of the sum to determine the new total. For example, if you are dealt an 8 of hearts and a 7 of clubs, (8 + 7 = 15), your total would actually be just five points. To win, your hand must be the one closest to nine.
Therefore, if the Player has a 3 of hearts and a 5 of clubs (8 points), and the Banker has a 2 of clubs and a 5 of spades (7 points), the Player would end up winning that hand.
When the Player is dealt cards that add up to an eight or nine (i.e., a two of clubs, and a seven of spades), that is called a “natural win.” When that happens, no more cards are dealt, and the bets are paid out.
When Do You Need One More Card?
In baccarat, the Player’s hand is always completed first. You determine when there is a third card by looking at the point totals. If the Player has 8 or 9 points, then no more cards are dealt. The Player always stands, (doesn’t draw any more cards) when their cards total up to 6 or 7. However, if the Player’s cards total 0 to 5, then the Player is allowed to draw another card unless the Banker already has an 8 or a 9. In that case, the Banker wins, and there are no more cards dealt and bets are paid out.
Third Card Rules For The Banker
The rules for the third card are a little different for the Banker. If the Player does not draw any more cards after his initial two, the Banker is allowed to draw an additional card on a hand total of 0 to 5. However, on a hand total of 6 or 7, the Banker is not allowed to draw any more cards. All other hands depend on what the Player drew for his third card. When you are first playing, it might be helpful to keep a cheat sheet next to you, so you can understand why things happen.
- If the Player drew a 9, 10, face-card (Jack, Queen, King), or ace for his third card, then the Banker draws when he has between 0-3 and doesn’t draw if he has a 4-7.
- If the Player drew an 8 for his third card, then the Banker draws if he has between a 0-2, and doesn’t draw if he has a 3-7.
- If the Player drew a 6 or 7 for his third card, then the Banker draws if he has between a 0-6, and doesn’t draw if he has a 7.
- If the Player drew a 4 or 5 for his third card, then the Banker draws if he has between a 0-5, and doesn’t draw if he has a 6 or 7.
- If the Player drew a 2 or 3 for his third card, then the Banker draws if he has between a 0-4, and doesn’t draw if he has between a 5–7.
Once that third card is dealt, the totals of the hands are calculated. No additional cards are dealt at this time. Just like before, whichever hand is closer to nine, wins.
When you start playing baccarat at an online casino, it is relatively simple to pick it up in a couple of hands. When you are playing an automated version by yourself, you can take the time to make sure you understand each round of the gameplay.
The Tie Bet in Baccarat
If both the Player and the dealer have the same amount of points in their hand after the game is finished, it results in a tie. That means the bets placed on the Banker, and the bets placed on the Player are returned. Therefore, you don’t lose any money, but you also didn’t win anything. Only if you made a bet on the tie will you be paid. The payout of the tie is typically between 8:1 to 9:1.
How To Bet In Baccarat
Once you have figured out to baccarat, the next step is to learn how to bet properly. A little bit of strategy can help make baccarat a profitable game for you. Here are some tips you should follow to make the most money betting at an online casino on baccarat.
Tip 1: Never Make The Tie Bet
Betting on the tie bet is one of the worst house edges at approximately 14.4%. That means that every time you bet $100, you will lose $14.4. Because there are so many variables to ending the game in a tie in baccarat, it is one of the worst odds you can make. Even though the payout can be helpful when it happens, it isn’t worth trying.
On the other hand, the Banker has a house edge of 1.06, and the Player has a house edge of 1.24, making those much more profitable bets.
Tip 2: Bet On The Banker
Whenever you are playing baccarat, usually the best bet you can make is on the Banker. The Banker wins a little more than 50% on all the hands, making it an attractive choice. However, it is important to note that many online and brick-and-motor casinos will charge a 5% commission on bets placed on the Banker. Even with that caveat, it is still almost always worth it to make your first bet be on the baker.
Tip 3: Keep Betting Banker Until He Loses
Always try to capitalize on winning streaks. Because the Banker has a slightly better chance for going on a winning streak, it is typically a good idea to stick with the Banker if your first bet is a win.
Of course, every hand you are dealt with will still be faced with the same house edge. Therefore, you shouldn’t get too confident or aggressive with your betting. There is no guarantee that the streak will continue (or even occur in the first place!)
Tip 4: Take A Break
The traditional version of the game is a little bit slower than an online version of the game. In the traditional version, there might be between 35-40 decisions in an hour. However, if you are playing online, the games might be lightning-fast, and you might go through 150 to 200 decisions in just one hour. That means you should not be afraid to take it slower. Faced with 200 decisions even if the house edge is 1.06, it could still be determinantal to your bank account if your luck turns. Every 20-30 minutes, assess what your winnings or losses are and decide if you should continue on.
Baccarat has many different strategies to choose from when you go to an online casino to play. However, in my opinion, the best types of strategies are ones that are easy to understand, logical, and give you the best likelihood of winning. Here are the top strategies to help you win.
Betting Strategy 1: The One-Sided Betting Technique
This technique might seem too simplistic, but it can be quite useful. In this strategy, you might choose to bet on just one side, either the Banker or the Player. When you use this technique, it puts you ahead in the odds.
Typically, in a game of baccarat, both the Player and the Banker do gain a slight advantage at some point. Therefore, if you choose one side and stick with it, your chances of at least breaking in by the end of your betting session are slightly better.
When playing this strategy, it is important to remember never to let yourself lose more than three decisions in a row. Remember, a tie does not count as a loss, If you do lose three in a row, then you should sit out a few hands, switch tables, and wait for your luck to turn.
Betting Strategy 2: Breaking The Doubles
When playing baccarat, most of the decks will switch between a Player win and then a Dealer win, and also double outcomes, like two Player wins in a row.
Often, Player or Banker streaks will happen in small clusters, so either back to back, or within a few cards of each other.
You notice the zigzag pattern occurring (Player win, Banker win, Player win, Banker win, etc.), bet with it. When you lose because a double win occurred (two Banker wins in a row), double down on the next hand. Therefore, if the first two hands went “Banker win, Banker win,” then you should double down, or bet twice as much on the Player winning the next hand. That way, you are breaking the doubles and still keeping your bankroll consistent.
Other Versions of Baccarat
Super 6/Punto 2000 is another variation where the money is paid out on the banker bets, rather than the typical 95%. However, in this type of game, when the Banker wins with 6, it only pays out 50% of the bet.
When you are first starting to play baccarat online, it might be a good idea to keep track of the Player wins vs the Banker wins on a piece of paper next to your desk or mobile phone. By tracking to see what the trends are, it can help you form a more effective betting strategy. Make sure to do research before you sign up for an online casino to make sure it is a reputable place to gamble your money at. Once you have figured out how baccarat works, you are ready to play!
